Five Bison were named the December Student-Athletes of the Month
FARGO, N.D. - Five North Dakota State athletes were selected as the December Student-Athletes of the Month. Based on the guidelines of a 3.0 or higher grade point average and at least a sophomore status, the winners were chosen among the 16 North Dakota State intercollegiate programs.
Matt Bowar
Senior pitcher for the Bison baseball team... Majoring in physical education with a 3.80 grade point average... Saw action in 15 games for NDSU in 2007 with a pair of starts, posting a 5.14 earned run averge with 18 strikeouts... Expected to compete for a slot in the starting rotation in 2008... Hometown is Moorhead, Minn... Son of Myron and Joan Bowar.
Michael Brown
Senior defensive tacke for the football team... Physical education major sporting a 3.40 grade point average... Played a significant role for the football team, seeing action in all 11 games and recording 31 tackles on the season, including 10 solo tackles... Also recorded two and a half tackles for loss and a quarterback sack... Hometown is Larimore, N.D... Son of Jerry and Kathy Brown.
Tyler Lekang
Senior offensive guard for the football team... Majoring in electrical engineering with a 3.16 grade point average... Was a key member of the Bison offensive line which helped lead the team to a 10-1 record in 2007 and generate over 460 yards of total offense per game... Veteran lineman who saw action in 31 games during his NDSU career... Hometown is New Brighton, Minn... Son of Theresa Lekang of Red Land, Ala., and Lane Brettingen of Lakeville, Minn.
Ben Mathiason
Senior pitcher for the baseball team... University studies major with a 3.13 grade point average... One of the starting pitchers in the 2007 Bison rotation, posted a 3-4 record with a 6.08 earned run average and 36 strikeouts... Transferred to North Dakota State from Spokane Community College where he logged over 50 innings during his career... Hometown is Kalispel, Mont... Son of James and Peggy Mathiason.
Annika Walseth
Senior forward on the women's basketball team... Majoring in physical education with a 3.66 grade point average... Has seen action in all six games for the Bison this season, averaging 2.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game, including a career high 15 points against Idaho... Transferred to North Dakota State from Colorado State where she averaged just over three points and two rebounds per game.
